Environmental enrichment consists of providing physical and mental stimuli that reproduce natural animal behaviors. The practice prevents boredom, anxiety, and object destruction.
Types of enrichment
Enrichment can be sensory, dietary, cognitive, physical, and social. Alternating stimuli weekly prevents the animal from losing interest.
Toys and challenges
Interactive toys, such as fillable balls and puzzles, stimulate problem-solving. For cats, scratching posts and cardboard boxes create opportunities to climb and hide.
Safety and supervision
Supervise toy use and check for small parts that could be swallowed. Materials should be resistant and appropriate for the animal's size.
