Cat behavior: understanding your cat's language

Cats communicate in subtle ways that many owners do not understand. Understanding feline body and vocal language is essential to identify needs, emotions and possible health problems.

Tail language

A raised tail indicates confidence and satisfaction. Tail low or between legs signals fear. Rapid movements from side to side demonstrate irritation — unlike dogs, where this movement indicates joy.

Vocalizations

Meowing is a form of communication developed specifically to interact with humans — adult cats rarely meow at each other. Purring generally indicates comfort, but can also be a self-healing mechanism in painful situations.

Kneading bread

The movement of pressing the paws alternately is a behavior reminiscent of breastfeeding. When your cat does this to you, she is showing comfort and deep affection.

Signs of Stress

Dilated pupils, flat ears, bristly fur, and excessive hiding are signs of stress. Sudden changes in behavior deserve veterinary attention to rule out medical causes.
