The litter box is one of the most important items for cats living indoors. Litter box problems are the leading cause of inappropriate elimination, the number one reason for cat abandonment.
Golden rule: quantity
The recommendation is to have one box per cat, plus one extra. In a home with two cats, the ideal is three boxes placed in different locations. This reduces territorial conflicts and ensures easy access.
Type of litter
Clumping litters make daily cleaning easier. Avoid scented litters, as cats' sensitive sense of smell may cause them to reject them. Silica litters are a low-maintenance alternative, but not all cats accept them.
Placement
Place the box in a quiet location, away from food and water. Avoid high-traffic areas or spots near noisy appliances. The cat needs to feel safe when using the box.
Cleaning and maintenance
Remove waste daily and replace all the litter weekly. Wash the box with water and mild soap — avoid products with ammonia or strong odors. Replace the entire box every 6 to 12 months.
